This past weekend, the front lawn of the Bryn Du mansion hosted Ohio's second largest ultimate Frisbee tournament this year. Twenty-three teams from seven different states traveled to Granville to compete in this two-day event.

"This weekend we have about 32 students coming [from Denison]," said co-captain and four-year veteran Justin Leibowitz. "With most tournaments we have about 15-20 people, but it's a long tournament, so it'll be a pretty good turnout."

The team was very confident heading into the weekend, even though they had played against few of the weekend's opponents.

"About three-fourths of the teams coming this weekend we know very little about," said Leibowitz. "With this being my fourth year, it's really exciting to see that."

Denison, who brought two teams to the tournament, came away 4-0 with their A team, and 2-2 with their B squad on Saturday. The A team defeated Mojo Disc Squad, a club team 11-9, Campbellsville 15-3, Aquinas 15-8 and Albion 15-3. Denison's B team defeated Campbellsville 11-8 and Belmont 15-10, but lost to Western Michigan and Towson. On Sunday, Denison managed to come in 5th overall, a very respectable standing considering the heavy competition involved. On Sunday, the A team went 3-1, and B went 0-1. Overall, DU placed 5th out of 25 teams, according to senior Jon Kallay.

For people who are unfamiliar with the sport, Denison has had an Ultimate Frisbee team for about 15 years. Denison plays "college ultimate," where the team is open to both men and women. In the past, the sport's roster has been dominated by males. However, this year the frisbee team is putting together the first Women's Ultimate club to provide opportunities for the women who hadn't seen much action in the past.

"So far, we've had a great turnout for practices," said Kate McInerney, one of the leaders of the women's team. "It's really important right now that we're in a more comforting environment because a lot of girls have wanted to play in the past, but they were a little intimidated by the guys."

The teams have grown immensely the past several years with a team roster of over 100 players. Unfortunately, like all good teams, the top players will either graduate or leave to study abroad. Key players like Kevin Wayner, Jimmy Nelson, Robbie Christian and Mike Kaput fall into this category. While this will leave an impact on the team, co-captain Cory Hylton is staying optimistic.

"I am very proud of [the team's] success over the past couple of years. I hope this tradition continues and the program continues to grow in years to come," Hylton said.

The season picks back up in March, with the first tournament in April. "We might have a few tournaments in January and February, probably one indoors and two outdoors, but we'll have to brace for the cold and just see what happens with the weather."

While this is the last major tournament for the Frisbee team this semester, be sure to check them out in the spring when they return to action.
