Aside from the summer scholars and various high school camps, parts of Denison's campus will also be undergoing some major face lifts this summer.

"We try to put a certain amount of money back into the buildings every summer," said Seth Patton, vice president of finance and management. "Most of [the major projects] cost at least $100,000."

Patton said, the largest project will be a renovation of all the plumbing in Shorney Hall.

"Shorney is a 1967 building," Patton said. "Lime builds up in plumbing lines, and they have to work when you get everyone in there."

The bathrooms will also be upgraded, creating individual shower stalls rather than the previous group shower design separated by curtains, reflecting the students' preference for more privacy.

"There's not enough privacy if you're in the corner [stall]," freshman Sarah Churchill, a current Shorney resident, said. "You have to put your stuff on the other side [of the shower area, where the racks are."

Freshman Becca Lynn, another current Shorney resident, said she agreed.

"It could definitely be more private than it is now," she said.

Sprinkler systems will also be installed in Shorney dorm rooms.

After this takes place, 85 percent of all bed spaces at Denison will have sprinklers in them, Patton said.

An elevator will also be added to Curtis dining hall, behind the service center. The elevator will be an addition to the building, constructed on the outside rather than the inside of the existing building.

Men's and women's restrooms will be also be installed in the dining hall itself.

By next semester, Swasey Chapel will also be air conditioned.

Doane Dance Hall and Burton Hall on South quad will also be air conditioned, connected by underground pipes to the chiller in Burke Hall.

The Chapel Walk will look a little different when students return to campus, too. The walk, stretching from the Academic Quad to East Quad, will be torn up and replaced with paver-style bricks, providing a more solid, flat surface for walking. Concrete curbs will also be added, Patton said.

All academic buildings will have key card access so that faculty and students can work in labs in the evening after the buildings have been locked, Patton said.

"Students with specific majors used to be given keys for their major's building," Patton said, "but instead their key cards will be activated [so they can have access to the building]."

Another goal is to make Herrick Auditorium better-suited for musical performances. A sound system will be installed, Patton said, and the auditorium's lighting capabilities will also be enhanced.

These are only a few of the renovations happening on campus over the summer. Other smaller projects will take place as well, Patton said, but those plans have not yet been cemented.
