With 20 electoral votes at stake, Ohio could be the deciding state in the 2008 presidential election.

This is a historical election, no matter which way the votes swing - the first black man as president or the oldest man ever to be inaugurated coupled with the first woman as vice president.

And since the voters in Ohio hold so much power as a swing state, everyone eligible needs to cast a vote before Nov. 4.

Many students on campus have been diligently working to register students on campus to vote in Ohio. Some students have even switched their voting registration to Ohio, because they believe their votes will count more in this swing state than in their home states.

This year, though, Ohio government officials are making it even easier.

As many have heard, Ohio has a new way to vote this year - sufficiently eliminating the age-old excuse of "I didn't have time to go to the polls."

Early voting is a smart idea, because it gives each voter the chance to participate in his or her government.

Voters have three ways this year to cast their ballot instead of the regular two - absentee and going to the polls on election day.

The idea of opening the polls early was not a favorable one for Republican nominee John McCain.

According to an article written by the Associated Press last week, the GOP had issues with Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's decision to allow early voting in the state.

Ending yesterday (Monday, Oct. 6), was a week long period Ohioans could both register to vote and cast their early ballots at the same time and place - the week of contention for the Republican party.

The AP article stated GOP representatives were upset because they thought Jennifer Brunner, a democrat, was allowing early voting to give her party a head start in the election.

The Ohio Supreme Court upheld Brunner's decision last week.

Just a week into the early voting period, it's hard to tell what the effects of the new policy will be.
