Senior forward Carolyn Simpson and the Denison Women's Basketball team are coming together at just the right time. Simpson and her teammates are in the midst of their hottest streak of the year, which was continued with two historic victories last week.

After closing out 2008 with a 3-6 record overall record and riding a four game losing streak into the new year after a tough trip to San Diego, the Big Red have yet to lose in 2009.

Last Wednesday in Gambier, Ohio, Simpson led the Denison women on a record setting night. The senior tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds in a 71-49 thrashing of rival Kenyon. The 22 point margin of victory was the largest win in school history by Denison Women's Basketball over Kenyon. The win also marked the sixth consecutive win for the team, a season high, and it allowed them to remain perfect in NCAC play.

Last Saturday, the Big Red returned home and carried their 7-0 conference record with them against Allegheny. Once again, the team did not disappoint, defeating the Gators of Allegheny by a score of 73-53. In this game, it was sophomore Shaina Kaiser leading the way in points, with 15, but it was Carolyn Simpson again who was highlighted in another historic night.

Simpson scored nine points, but also grabbed eight rebounds, adding to an already remarkable year. Simpson hauled in an offensive rebound in late in the first half against Allegheny to give her 700 for her career. She is the third player in Denison Women's Basketball history to achieve this landmark, and also joins Kristen Sheffield and Christi Clay as the only players in Denison history to score 1,000 points and grab 700 rebounds for their careers.

For the game, Denison lit up Allegheny from the field, shooting a blistering 50% (29 for 58), including ten three-pointers. The victory moved their win streak to seven games, kept them atop the NCAC standings at 8-0, and moved their overall record to 10-6.

Denison will be tested once again in their next game on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Granville, where they will take on Wittenberg, who currently is in second place in the NCAC with a conference record of 6-2. It will be the second meeting this season between the two schools, with Denison winning the first game 58-54 at Wittenberg back on Dec. 6, 2008.

After the Wittenberg game, the Big Red will play seven more games during the regular season, all of them being NCAC contests, including match-ups against Earlham (twice), Ohio Wesleyan, Hiram, Kenyon, Oberlin and Alleghany before they prepare for the NCAC Tournament.

Coach Sara Lee's squad will carry this recent build up of momentum into the NCAC Tournament in search of their fifth consecutive conference tournament championship and yet another NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2008-2009 team is truly proving that they are top dogs in the NCAC.
