MEN'S SOCCER

Record: 9-4 Overall, 5-1 NCAC (2nd)

Stat Leaders: Sr. Peter Shorten (5 Goals, 2 Assists),

Sr. Tucker Mauke (5 Goals, 2 Assists)

Saturday's 4-2 win over Wittenberg put the Big Red alone in second place in the NCAC with a 5-1 record. Their 9-4 overall mark is their best record since 2007, when they finished the regular season at 10-6. Denison sits one game ahead of third place Kenyon (4-2-1 in the NCAC), which they played to a scoreless tie on Oct. 21. The Big Red hold impressive wins over Wabash, Case Western Reserve, Otterbein and Wilmington in 2009, and senior goalie Kevin Donahue has been a force between the pipes. Donahue set the career shutout record (25) after a 2-0 win over Oberlin earlier this year. In the double-overtime tie against Kenyon, Donahue faced 30 shots, including a game-saving dive in overtime. Seniors Tucker Mauke and Peter Shorten have carried the Big Red thus far offensively, as they lead their team in points with 12 apiece.

FOOTBALL

Record: 2-5 Overall, 1-3 NCAC (T-6th)

Stat Leaders: Sr. Nick Krempasky (617 rush yards, 6 touchdowns) Fr. Nick Stephens (546 pass yards, 4 touchdowns)

To summarize their season to this point, the Big Red football team has been marred by injuries. Sophomore starting quarterback Braden Layer departed for the season after sustaining a serious injury in practice on Sept. 29 before the Case Western game, and junior defensive back Nick Weiss was knocked out for the season with a broken collar bone during practice as well. There have been some bright spots for the Denison team, however. Freshman quarterback Nick Stephens has done a solid job in his rookie campaign after taking over as the starter on Oct. 3 against Case Western. The Los Angeles, Calif. native has thrown for 546 yards and thrown four touchdowns so far in 2009.

Senior running back Nick Krempasky has been spectacular in the backfield for the Big Red this season. He has rushed for 617 yards and tallied six touchdowns in his final season at Denison.
