Next week, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC-NCA) will evaluate the quality of the institution. The evaluations take place every 10 years. Denison was last reviewed in 1999, and this year the process beings again.
Accreditation is an evaluation process ensuring that universities are carrying out their mission, allowing approved universities to receive money from the federal government and granting students access to federally-supported grants.
The accreditation process begins with a self-study report, compiled by the Self-study Steering Committee, a group of faculty and administration which has been analyzing several aspects of the campus since the fall of 2007. This report, available on reserve in the library and online, was submitted to the HLC-NCA and department heads at Denison. The lengthy report has five categories: mission & integrity; preparing for the future; student learning & effective teaching; acquisition, discovery & application of knowledge; engagement & service.
From Nov. 16-18, there will be members of HLC-NCA meeting with President Knobel and the Board of Trustees, holding open meetings with students, faculty and staff, and even eating in the campus dining halls.
Students should be prepared to answer questions about the campus community - especially the academic atmosphere. After the evaluation in 1999, the weakest component was related to student learning, which was quickly addressed and confirmed to be on track in 2003 when the HLC-NCA checked back in. Nonetheless, it is the issue in which the agency is most interested.
For Denison, this pass-fail type test is a valuable one. Next week, the curtain will open and the stage light will be shining on the Denison community as this visiting agency flies through to examine Denison's strengths and challenges.

I think it is that the evaluations take place every 10 years. It helps see all the improvements and disadvantages of the last ten years.
