The cast of "Norton" rehearses for the upcoming performance in the Black Box Theater.

A cast of 23 dedicated performers has been hard at work on senior Bobby McGlynn's production "Norton," a musical set in mid-1800s San Francisco. The story focuses on the historical figure Joshua Norton, an investor who decides to proclaim himself Emperor of the United States.

McGlynn began research for the show about three and a half years ago-the production features many events that actually transpired at the time. He spent six months writing the music and lyrics for "Norton," and four months writing the dialogue. The musical is sponsored by DITA, and is completely student-produced.

Senior Erica Hughes is the director, sophomore Rachel Nin is stage manager, sophomore Abby Milton is assistant stage manager, senior Alison Waldman is choreographer and senior Katie Dahm is in charge of costumes. Visiting assistant professor of music Kevin Wines, the only faculty member involved, serves as the accompanist.

The cast has been rehearsing three times a week since early October, and is currently rehearsing every night.

Be sure to catch this unique musical production, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30th at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.
