Twelve Denison senior swimmers took to the pool on Saturday (Jan. 23) for their final home meet of their collegiate careers, and they each went out in style.

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Grove City College in convincing fashion, with the Big Red men winning 158-124 and the women winning 167-119.

For the DU men, leading the way was sophomore Robert Barry, who swept the backstroke events and was also a part of the winning 200-medley relay team with juniors Jake Lewing and Chris Bagley, and sophomore Mike Barczak. That group posted a time of 1:35.07 and Barry returned with a time of 51.40 in the 100-meter backstroke and 1:55.27 in the 200-meter backstroke.

Senior Casey Browning earned a win on senior day in the 200-meter butterfly. He touched in at 1:57.32. The 1000-meter freestyle went to sophomore Austin Vierra, who completed the distance race in 10:15.95. Freshman Jay Haney won the 500-meter freestyle in 4:47.73. Senior John Nemeth was the winner in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:12.73 while Barczak picked up a pair of wins in the 50 and 100-meter freestyles. Barczak posted a time of 21.59 in the 50-meter and came back with a time of 47.41 in the 100-meter.

Denison's winners were rounded out by Lewing, in the 100-meter breaststroke (59.94), and sophomore Dan Thurston, who won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:43.61.

For the Denison women, freshman Alyssa Swanson tallied three victories to lead the way. She was a part of Denison's winning 200-meter medley relay squad along with senior Olivia Zaleski, junior Ksenia Golovkina and senior Kate Rich. That foursome touched in 1:47.68. Swanson would return to win the 200-meter freestyle in 1:52.78 and the 100-meter freestyle in 52.44. All three swims were NCAA provisional qualifying times but none were season-bests for the rookie.

In the 100-meter backstroke, Zaleski took the top spot with a time of 58.35 and Golovkina won the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:30.53. In the 100-meter breaststroke, sophomore Gail Blachly posted a strong time of 1:07.91 and fellow sophomore Emily Schroeder won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:07.60.

Freshman Lindsay Zeberlein took first place in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:08.01 and sophomore Marit Wangstad was a winner in the 50-meter freestyle in 24.85. In the swimming events, Denison's final winner was sophomore Hilary Callen, who posted a time of 10:21.75 in the 1000-meter freestyle.

In the diving events, junior Sammie Salas accumulated a score of 248.77 to win the women's one-meter dive. Freshman Elina Stark placed third with a score of 220.05.

Both teams will travel to Carnegie Mellon on Saturday (Jan. 30) in their final regular season meet before the NCAC Championships.
