Thousands of single girls (and guys, I suppose) dread the fourteenth of February every year. Sure, Valentine's Day is fun when you're in elementary school, and everyone is obligated to give you candy and cards. However, as you get older, this holiday quickly becomes the one day of the year where everyone feels the need to showcase the fact that they're in love and you're not. Bitter? No, realistic.
If you are used to spending Valentine's Day with your favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry's, I encourage you to make a change for the better this year. Valentine's Day does not have to be sad. It can actually be quite fun. Why not organize a dinner party with all of your single friends? Dress up in your nicest clothes and have everyone bring a delicious dessert-real food is optional. Have a good playlist on hand and dance the night away as you slip into a sugar coma.
Another fun thing to do with all of your friends on Valentine's Day is a movie marathon. If you decide to watch romantic comedies, When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail are some of my personal favorites. Of course, you can always go the opposite route and watch slasher movies instead-both are good options.
No single friends? There's nothing wrong with paying a visit to Mom and Dad if you're close by. Having a home cooked meal and someone to do your laundry can make for a truly wonderful Valentine's Day.
The bottom line for all you singletons is to remember that Valentine's Day can be as big or little of an ordeal as you make of it-just have fun and eat plenty of candy.
Ten (Cheap) Date Ideas
1) Bundle up and frolic outdoors. Take pictures. Admire nature. Have a picnic.
2) Have a board game tournament, and try to actually finish a game of Monopoly for once.
3) Cook dinner together. Eat by candlelight to make things fancy. Chocolate covered strawberries strongly recommended.
4) Go to Target or Walmart and try to see who can pick out the ugliest outfit.
5) Take a trip to a place neither of you have been before. Destinations can range from the obvious (i.e. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) to the obscure (i.e. The World's Largest Ball of Twine).
6) Go on a double date in which you assert your dominance over another couple by owning them in tennis (or another competitive sport of this nature).
