Medical Amnesty: Drinking without remorse?
Issue date: 2/9/10 Section: Editorials
Many of us have been there. We've been at a party, seen a friend have too much to drink and have promptly taken him or her home to bed.
Unfortunately, some alcohol consumption goes too far. We've all also probably heard sirens from ambulances rushing to take college students to the hospital after a night of heavy drinking almost turns deadly.
Alcohol poisoning is serious and life-threatening, and no student should have to feel like he or she can't seek help. The new medical amnesty policy encourages students to get their friends help without virtually any repercussions, something that would most likely not happen in the real world. It is irresponsible to not get someone the medical help he or she needs
Alcohol poisoning, in addition to being serious and life-threatening, is not normal alcohol consumption. When someone drinks himself or herself to the point of being unconscious and having all bodily functions stop working, it is a serious matter and must be addressed.
Education and awareness of alcohol use for people who will take advantage of the medical amnesty policy is necessary. Because such an amount of drinking is not ever healthy behavior, students must learn the risks and dangers involved with alcohol.
It almost seems easy to have the mindset that, as young people, we are invincible. But when the unexpected happens, we shouldn't have to think twice about helping our friends. We applaud the administration for their efforts to address this important issue.
