This semester, the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. focused on constructing community.
The freshmen community of the Black Student Union is planning to continue constructing community with "Black Love Week," which will occur from Feb. 15 to Feb. 19.
The week is devoted to promote and educate African American culture on campus and unify the campus community as a whole.
The events planners said they intended to show that the campus can move on from past racial tensions.
"During this week we're trying to make a better community, not rebuilding it," said Mike Ivy, a freshman psychology major who is on the planning committee. "If we rebuild, we force the community back to the moments that tore it apart."
The event's planners also hope that Black Love Week will remind students that the BSU has moved on from past confrontations.
"I really like the sentiment behind it," said DCGA vice president Kale Hills, a sophomore political science major. "It's really encouraging to see the African American community reach out and make the campus feel invited."
The week will have events like a talent show and a poetry night. Both events will allow participants to show their diverse talents and express their words to the community.
"Although it's called Black Love Week, we will be stressing diversity and communication," Ivy said, "We're not just trying to love blacks, but also community."
